AGE UK AND DIGITAL INCLUSION - FROM AN AGE UK INTERNET CHAMPION

Hi folksAt 55 (nearly 56) I'm new to the world of older people. I moved into a 50+ sheltered housing scheme just under 3 years ago, and am one of the 'babies' here. It's made me a lot more aware of older people's needs. There was very little going on when I moved in. The lovely man who is now (since last September!) my husband…See More

The Grove Road Estate Inclusion Project - update Oct 2012

The estate still suffers from a few negative people who do all they can to run down, criticize, mock and actually sabotage our project. Badly in need of a sense of humour a few months ago I nicknamed them the Death Eaters. One of them comes to events now - regularly - but don't get excited: he turns up with a sardonic smile on his face, counts heads (trying to make out the project is for a 'select minority' and therefore a flop) and leaves... Our innocent and optimistic workshop leaders often…See More

NOISE

I'm about to be published in a new journal called 'The Newhaven Journeyman' (Eleusinian Press - see them on Facebook/Wordpress). A friend sent me the call for articles a few months ago, and when I read the motivation behind the journal and its aims, and list of suggested topics I was inspired to write. My article, entitled 'Sounds of the Rainbow' is about my lifelong relationship with Noise. As a bipolar person, I am hypersensitive to sound, taste, smell, touch and light. I frequently have to…See More

IT'S SNOWING!!!

Incredible as it may seem, it's snowing here in Birmingham. Woke up this morning, went into kitchen to make a cuppa, thought 'It's a bit cold...' Waited for the rain... SNOW! And it's nearly the beginning of August.WHAT IS GOING ON? Have we offended Mother Nature/Eywa/Gaia so much that even the farmers and gardeners are being punished? The radishes are all leaf, the lettuces a soggy mass. The peas and beans are huddled at ground level and won't climb their sticks. Have only seen a couple of…See More

AGE UK INTERNET CHAMPIONSHIP NEWS

Hi friends - I was thrilled to be named one of this year's two Age UK Internet Champions at an award ceremony at the Royal Society, London, last week. The trophy (see my Facebook page) was presented by the wonderful and kind June Whitfield.

I share the title with James Perry (92 from the Isle of Sheppey). We were selected because we have amazing stories of how we endured our own computing and internet challenges and are now helping and encouraging other older people to do the…

Hello Jan - I hope you are well.

I thought I'd send you a quick message to draw your attention to a new topic I've just posted about community resources as I think you'd have some good thoughts to share on the topic...plus i mention your community gardening project in it :)

I'm looking to encourage us all to discuss local resources and community events, and as quite an active member of the site I was wondering if there any local projects in your area you'd like to tell people about? You can see my post and reply to it here.

Look forward to hearing from you

Kathryn

Well, to use the title "Grey Pride" surely implies that there is something wonderful about the colour? Go into your local art gallery and observe its use in beautiful paintings.

What a fantastic way to celebrate entering that new stage, the symbolism, the crown and especially the chocolate cake! The Red Tent shares Grey Pride's enthusiasm for ensuring the needs of older people are understood and represented.

I think other members would be interested in hearing more about your views and the croning ceremony, maybe you could add a new blog on the subject?  Do you think it would be ok to present the petition at the next meeting?  We have managed to get 40,000 signatures so far but still have a long way to go.
