I imagine that when I was diagnosed with the mental health condition cyclothymia (rapid cycling bipolar) 5 years ago most people expected me to curl up and shrivel away. I know there were a few who hoped I would (LOL, as they say!). Far from it. Here's my guest blog on the Big Lottery Fund site, posted by BIG today:…Continue

Community spirit high among UK’s older population…despite declining local services
New findings released today by older people’s charity, Anchor, show some fascinating insight into how grey-friendly the UK really is in 2012.

I am disheartened and frankly ashamed at the facile level of debate from"professionals and MP's" that surrounds the very real possibility of stopping free bus travel and the winter fuel allowance. Question Time with David Dimbleby was an example. The focus is all about spurious short term financial gains and nothing about the potential impact on the physical and emotional well being of the elderly, as well on the local economy. We go into our towns to meet friends, go to classes and…Continue
I thought it might be helpful, to those considering going to Birmingham Settlement for support/advice, and those who have friends/family who are considering them - it's a very positive testimony. None of the content is confidential - I believe in the power of honesty:
Best wishes to all, whatever your struggles
A conversation I had this weekend with family members spanning three generations has got me wondering about days gone by and how we remember the past.
Much is made of decades gone past being safer, we all seem to remember a time when our neighbourhoods were more friendly and we knew people better, when we would leave the door on the latch, children would play out and neighbours were…Continue

This year’s Budget announcement included a nasty surprise for the country’s older people; the amount of income that is not taxed will be frozen for those aged over 65, ending the longstanding entitlement to a higher personal allowance for pensioners.
This will undoubtedly have a huge impact on the people approaching retirement who are trying to make financial plans for their future.
The Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS) has called for the government to appoint a Minister for Older People in their latest report.
