Incredible as it may seem, it's snowing here in Birmingham. Woke up this morning, went into kitchen to make a cuppa, thought 'It's a bit cold...' Waited for the rain... SNOW! And it's nearly the beginning of August.
WHAT IS GOING ON? Have we offended Mother Nature/Eywa/Gaia so much that even the farmers and gardeners are being punished?
The radishes are all leaf, the lettuces a soggy mass. The peas and beans are huddled at ground level and won't climb their sticks. Have only seen a couple of slugs all 'summer' and not a single caterpillar or snail.
I'm not religious - spiritual, maybe - but I'm praying now for a fresh start for us all. Maybe the climatologists who've been telling us lately that latest climate summit didn't go far enough and that, with the amount of CO2-creating resources already mined we'll have gone over the tipping point if we burn it are right.
We have our community garden and our recycling bins. We're being careful. Maybe we're not being radical enough. Any ideas out there about how a two tower block sheltered housing scheme can be more respectful towards the climate please? I think we need to do more...
Best wishes to all
Jan

People laughed at me a few years ago when I said I wanted to live in a flat above the 2nd floor before flooding became a regular event. They're not laughing now. I've found some useful water-saving freebies on the Severn Trent website I've just ordered: a gadget for reducing the amount of water when you flush the loo, water-saving shower head, etc. Edible gardening is very important as you're cutting down on transport costs, but the weather hasn't been kind to our veg here. Still, the celery's done very well and makes nice soup. We're wondering what crops to plant next spring - or even if there's anything we could put in now that would yield something before winter comes on. A friend does indoor gardening using her guest bedroom...
Hello Jan,
What crazy weather indeed! I've been speaking to a few of my colleagues at Anchor and we are currently in the process of gathering ideas for energy saving actions from our customers and staff. A couple of suggestions I've heard just this morning include keeping your fridge and freezer at least three quarters full (using scrunched up newspaper to fill empty space) and reducing the temperature on the tumbledryer when drying clothes.
We are hoping to launch an internal campaign - would you be interested in hearing more about the tips people come up with? I could write a blog once we get more in if so :)
Comment by Frances Andrews-Speed on July 31, 2012 at 0:42 good grief snow?... its a bit colder here, but snow in July?....I have been on flood alert all summer( this has never happened before its always the end of the year...thats the time for flooding.....its very weird and worrying....and now they are halting a lot of the flood protection that was going to be put in place. Think its time I bought a boat and tied a long rope upto the top window of my house!!!
