Take part in landmark research project exploring whether Britain’s towns are “Grey Friendly”
Older people’s charity, Anchor, has today embarked on a landmark research project into the quality of life of thousands of older people across the country….and YOU can take part!
The research will aim to investigate standards of basic service provision from town to town, and will result in a ‘Grey Britain’ report offering insight into the impact of day-to-day services on older people, from transport to healthcare and the high street.
The ‘Grey Britain’ project follows recent research that found four in ten older people have been made to feel like ‘second-class citizens’ and one in three claim they have felt vulnerable after being treated negatively as a result of their age.
The report will address organisations which are failing to meet the needs of those aged over 65, shining light on issues connected to services that wider society may take for granted. The findings will recognise the service provisions that deserve praise as well as those that need changing to better cater for the town’s older people.
Jane Ashcroft, Chief Executive of Anchor, said:
“We all have ideas that could improve the services in our home towns, whether parking restrictions, healthcare waiting times or bus timetables. This survey is not just about finding fault, it is about celebrating the services and companies who do their upmost to improve older people’s lives every day. Now we have the opportunity to make a positive difference to how older people are treated in their home towns, to make their voices heard, and encourage change where needed.”

There are over 1,000 locations across the country so there should be one near you. In addition to taking the survey it would be great if, as a community, we could discuss how ‘grey friendly’ we feel the services provided in our towns are here on our site.
Real life examples of frustrations as well as good practice will really bring the report to life!

We are not treated well by our community or any of the governmnt depts. We are treated as if we are feeble minded, (quite often we are better educated and more alert than the younger 'officious' people that we try to talk to), We are 40% of this population we have a wealth of knowledge and experience that is wasted, its such a pity..we have learned through living. I despair at the number of ignorant and badly mannered young who treat their teachers, parents etc., with lack of respect. At the pornography shown everywhere, there is a time and place for everything...our young people are bombarded with this from all types of media. The dreadful effect of the so called size 0 on the young adults of today who end up with anorexia. The cult of drinking in excess and the popularity of the fast food industry which produces a future obese population. I read recently that Finland has abolished private schools....such a good idea, if you do not have private school in this country then all the schools would be of a high standard. Not just the private ones. This would transform the lives of all the citizens in this country not just the favoured few.
